CMU hosts annual Disability Awareness Fair today

Therapeutic horseback riding and adaptive outdoor sports are among the topics at the third annual Disability Awareness Fair at Central Michigan University Saturday.Local authors Dan and Jennifer Digmann are also scheduled to offer a presentation at the event, which is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Finch Fieldhouse on the CMU campus.The Digmanns, who wrote “Despite MS, to Spite MS,” are a Mt. Pleasant couple who both have multiple sclerosis and will speak about “being your best advocate” from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at the event, according to Beth Kennedy, program coordinator and director of Deaf Blind Central.A representative from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will speak about adaptive outdoor sports and recreation from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.Therapeutic horseback riding will be the topic discussed by a representative from Hopewell Ranch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.Saturday marks the third annual Disability Awareness Fair, which Kennedy said is a family-friendly event with vendors catering to people form infants to the elderly.There will also be several children’s activities, Kennedy said.There will be a craft area run by students in CMU’s education department, Kennedy said.Students working in conjunction with two local organizations, Dog Tales and Tale-Waggers, will be on hand to read to children as well, Kennedy said.More than 50 vendors are scheduled to be at the event, with many having interactive displays, she said. Those vendors are also being encouraged to bring treats for children who want to trick or treat at the fair, Kennedy said.There will also be wheelchair art by VSA-Michigan, Kennedy said.The event is held to help people living with disabilities, as well as their families and caregivers, to discover the resources available to help enhance and improve their quality of life, Kennedy said.The event highlight’s the university’s month-long effort to increase disability awareness, Kennedy said.A hand cycling clinic another activity at the event, set for 1 to 2 p.m.In addition to information tables and vendors, the fair will include interactive demonstrations, therapy dogs and concessions.Children are encouraged to dress in their favorite Halloween costumes for the fair.
