Outdoor projects sought to mark Queen s Diamond Jubilee
Post on: 2011-09-05 By: admin
OUTDOOR projects are being sought in South Gloucestershire to help mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year.
The local authority is currently looking for schemes, which it can help enhance to commemorate the national celebration next June.
The search comes as the council begins to spend £600,000 on improving green spaces in the district.
The funding for 22 identified schemes in the district, including £25,000 for Yate Outdoor Sports Centre (YOSC), is made up of monies given by developers, known as section 106 funding.
Cllr James Hunt, cabinet member for communities, said: "We are making a special effort with section 106 funding next year to concentrate on play parks and areas which would allow us to tie in with
the council’s efforts to celebrate the upcoming Diamond Jubilee.
"The efforts to celebrate next year are not limited to just section 106 funding and we are looking for other schemes and funding streams, as well as partners such as local residents and friends
groups, to ensure that the strong positive legacy of play we have in South Gloucestershire is significantly enhanced."
The council is hoping to access some additional funding from the SITA Trust, the charitable arm of the waste firm, which is part of the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge and making £1 million
available for projects.
The Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge is a campaign to protect 2012 outdoor recreational spaces in communities all across the country as a permanent living legacy of the Diamond Jubilee.
Cllr Hunt added: "As a council, we are determined to secure investment to improve our local parks and play areas because these green lungs are so effective at bringing neighbours and communities
"Here in South Gloucestershire, we are determined to mark Her Majesty’s remarkable milestone of serving the great British people for 60 years, which is why many of the improvement schemes will be
carried out in her honour."
